How this works

About this group

We are the New Community (Refugee) Men’s Shed, established with members drawn from Direct Provision Centres for refugees in Waterford. We are a member of the Irish Men’s Shed Association and a Conference of St Vincent De Paul. Refugees are among the most vulnerable groups in our community with little or no connections to the host community and most likely to enter a cycle of poverty which may last for generations. We think we can prevent this by engaging refugees in a men’s shed.

Reasons to support this group

  • Refugees are among the most vulnerable groups in our community with little or no connections to the host community and most likely to enter a cycle of poverty which may last for generations. We think we can prevent this by engaging refugees in a men’s shed. Through sharing woodworking skills refugee men can improve their self esteem and build friendships in an informal, English language environment.
  • Refugee men can enrich our wider community by adding value to our social, artistic or economic activities. But this can’t be achieved unless we engage with them building friendships and offering appropriate training opportunities.
  • Refugees for the most part have little or no connections with the host community. Our shed offers a place where friendships can be built in a friendly English speaking environment
